Harry Potter Studios

For my birthday this year, I decided to spend my money on taking us all to the Harry Potter Studio tour near Hemel Hempstead, as we all love Harry Potter! 😉

We traveled up on the Friday, straight from school, and stopped half way to have homemade pasties in the car. Whilst we all went to the toilet though, Coby decided to make a run for it so Kelly had to chase him all through the services and he nearly got out on to the main road. He was a very naughty boy for doing this and was properly told off! Anyway, we made it to our hotel in Hemel Hempstead in good time and sorted our stuff out. Kelly and the boys gave me my birthday cake there and I was surprised to see it was a Harry Potter themed cake that Kelly had made. It was great!

The next day, after not much sleep, we had our full buffet breakfast and made our way to the studios for the tour, which was only about 15 minutes away.  We found it easily enough, parked up and got our reserved tickets from the machines. We then had to go and join a massive queue, even though we had a time slot, but had a good look around the reception area where there was Harry Potter memorabilia hung up. We were all quite excited, and probably too excited, as the boys were being naughty at this point.  Once we made it through the queue, we started on the tour, which was brilliant. There was a short cinema where the actors described certain aspects of the tour and then the screen moved upwards to reveal the actual doors to the main hall at Hogwarts. We then had to go through them and thus entered Hogwarts’ main hall. It was great! We carried on through the tour and looked at various sets, such as the Gryffindor common room and bedrooms, other class rooms at Hogwarts, and lots of other exciting things to do with the movie. The Hogwarts Express train was amazing to see and we had some pictures taken of us sat in the set area where they filmed the actors sat inside the train. We also had some food in the cafe and Kelly and I had some Butterbeer, but the boys wouldn’t taste it!  Next was the outdoor lot where number 4 Privit Drive was, and the Knight Bus and the bridge set that leads to Hogwarts in the films. Moving into the other stage area, we saw lots of dummies and puppets for the various creatures in the films but the best was towards the end when we walked through Diagon Alley and then to the actual scale model of Hogwarts that was used in the film. These two areas were absolutely amazing and the castle was breathtaking. By this time, Coby was tired out and fell asleep on me, so I had to carry him around the final part of the tour and into the shop, where he finally woke a little (surprise that!). We had a good look around and bought some souvenirs which included Harry Potter’s wand for Ben, and a glow tip wand for Aaron (where the tip lights up when you move it like casting a spell for light) and a Hogwarts mug for Coby. Kelly and I also bought a few things.  We all had had a great time, apart from the fuss with the boys being naughty and not doing as they were told, and we would definitely go again, as it was a lot to take in in one go!

Afterwards, we drove back to Hemel Hempstead and to a leisure park where we had some food in a restaurant and then went back to the hotel to pack and go to sleep, before our full buffet breakfast again in the morning and the drive home.

Swimming Update

Ben hasn’t been to swimming for several weeks now as the leisure centre had a major maintenance issue and had to close. Hopefully this won’t stop him from enjoying it as he has nearly completed stage 4 now! So hopefully, when it re-opens, it will only be a few weeks until he completes the stage. 😉

Karate Update

Ben has given up Karate for the time being as he has lost interest in it. I think the cause was the last grading when he got really worried and upset about it. Its a shame as he has done really well so far to become a Blue Belt but he can always start again in the future, as he has lifetime membership to the Karate club he joined.

Games and Art Club

Before the half term holiday, Ben joined a couple of clubs at school. The first was Games club (board games) during Monday lunch breaks and the other was Art club which was after school on a Thursday until 4pm. I think he missed the games club on a Monday for a few weeks as it didn’t seem to be run very well so the children completely forgot about it. The after school art club on a Thursday was better (as it was after school), so they couldn’t forget about it. He didn’t seem to do much there though, but he did bring home a picture he made there before half term (see below).  Both clubs ended at the half term holiday, so that is that for school clubs again until the New Year!

Ben’s 8th Birthday

This year for his birthday, Ben wanted to play bowling, so we booked a bowling party at the local Tenpin bowling. He invited 7 other friends, which made 10 of them altogether and they all had a couple of games of bowling each, using two lanes. During the bowling, our party host gave them all sweets and made balloon guns and swords for them. They also had some nice food midway through the 2 hours of bowling, which they all mostly scoffed. It was mostly good fun apart from some of the boys getting rather too excited and deciding to mess around and fight a bit. Ben also managed to drop the heaviest bowling ball on his big toe (as he wasn’t concentrating properly!) so ended up crying his eyes out as it must have hurt a lot! The nail on his big toe has since gone a bit black. It was a fun couple of hours though, and all the boys that attended seemed to enjoy it all. Thanks to everyone that came and got Ben a present.

Before the bowling, which started at 10am, Ben opened his presents at home. He was rather more restrained than normal opening his presents this year (must be getting older!), but he gradually went through and opened them all up. His main presents this year were a big Lego Star Wars ship to build, a Star Wars watch, Mr Bean Complete DVD Boxset, Mr Bean joke book (he is crazy about Mr Bean at the moment!!!), the usual clothes, and a few other little bits. He was very happy with all of it, which was good. We then had to rush around and get sorted for bowling.

During the afternoon and evening, after bowling, we had a BBQ for some family that could make it. Ben had more presents from people including Grandma, Uncle Darren, Aunty Alex, Uncle Josh and Caleb, and we all had a good scoff! The weather wasn’t ideal for a BBQ as there were heavy downpours or rain and gusts of wind, but it was good fun and everyone enjoyed it all.

The following day, we popped down to Gramps’ house for dinner and Ben had some more presents and some lovely food at The White House pub (it was Gramps’ birthday as well). On the way home, we stopped in to Smyths Toy Store in Plymouth and Ben spent some of his birthday money and Smyths voucher that he had been given, so he was very happy.

Overall, Ben had a great birthday and we managed to cram lots in! Thanks to everyone who gave him cards, money and presents! 😉
